An example of a German bomber - Junkers 88 - from the last war, lost on January 17, 1943, lies at a depth of 53 meters off the Mediterranean coast of Frioul. The plane was at greater depth, but one day a trawler snagged the wreck with its dredger and, trying to free itself, moved it. In 1989, a diver - Luc Vanrell - discovered the aircraft within range of his diving suit. It was entangled in the dredger's nets, broken in two. Remains of the trawl hooked to the wreck still float at 45 meters. The German cross is still visible, despite the time spent underwater...
Since its discovery, divers - trophy hunters... - have damaged the tiles of the once-intact canopy. The nets, meanwhile, were largely removed during safety drills by the Institut National de Plongée Professionnelle...
