On the road to As Salman...
One of the 72 AMX 10 RCs of Operation Daguet passes in front of the carcass of a Kuwaiti M113 troop carrier seized by Iraqi forces and later destroyed by the coalition.
Developed in October 1990 as a strictly defensive operation to support the Saudi army and stop the Iraqi invasion, Daguet took on a truly offensive character in 1990. With almost 10,000 troops stationed in the Gulf, Operation Daguet was the largest military operation since the Algerian war. As of February 26, 1991, the results of Daguet were as follows:
- capture of the As Salman road junction and annihilation of the 45th Iraqi infantry division, i.e. 2,956 prisoners - 20 T55 & T62 destroyed - 2 T72 captured - 17 light armored vehicles destroyed - 114 trucks destroyed & 7 captured - 26 artillery pieces (howitzers/DCA) destroyed & 40 recovered - 70 82mm & 120mm mortars recovered...
The AMX 30 B2 fired 270 105mm shells - the AMX 10 RC 290 105mm shells - the TRF-1 1,190 155mm shells. The infantry sent 22 Milan missiles & 560 120mm mortar shells. Gazelle helicopters fired 328 Hot missiles...
There were only two fatalities... Mission accomplished...
Basra highway...
