The blitzkrieg of 1939 enabled the industry to increase its workforce considerably.

The first war locomotive - a 150 with single expansion and 2 cylinders - left the Borsig works in Henningsdorf on September 12, 1942.

An interesting feature of the 52 was the construction of a sub-series equipped with a condensing unit. Draft is obtained by a turbofan driven by exhaust steam and housed in the upper part of the smokebox. After passing through an oil separator, the exhaust steam condenses in the tender through a series of radiators. The advantages of this type of machine are obvious in a cold country like Russia.

It is possible to cover distances of around 600 km without refuelling. This results in low smoke emissions, making it difficult for air fighters to spot the convoy.
